Your front door gives off a lasting first impression to guests – before you’ve even so much as opened it – according to new research.
The findings, as published by UK site, Home Beautiful, are rather illuminating – to say the least.
The study was conducted by Pantone for London-based estate agency, Marsh & Parsons, and looked into the psychological associations between the colour of your home’s front door and the impression it gives to visitors about the kind of person you are.

The research may just encourage you to steer clear of minimal whites and opt for a louder tone instead.
“You can’t be scientific about people’s choice of colour, but clearly someone who chooses black is probably inclined towards an imposing first impression that suggests power and prestige,” Alex Lyle, sales director of Marsh & Parsons, tells Home Beautiful.

Darker shades
Deeper hues add an air of sophistication to any home’s exterior, Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute, reveals to Home Beautiful.

“Black (or Black Onyx as we refer to it internally) is elegant, powerful and prestigious,” Laurie says, adding: “It is imposing, sleek and chic”.
“Castor Grey, a deep and dusty shade, is thought to be timeless and classic, and doesn’t run the risk of going out of fashion,” says Laurie.
Meanwhile, Navy Peony, a popular and versatile deep blue, tells anyone passing by that you’re a trustworthy and authoritative sort of person.

Neutral and natural
White or natural tones tend to be popular with anyone who loves Scandi style.
“Brilliant White is simple, crisp and pristine and often favoured by those going for a minimalist look,” says Laurie.
Natural wood like pine, maple, Douglas fir and oak also scream simplicity and add a rustic and comforting feel to your space.
Pretty in pastel
Anyone who’s looking to really set a positive and welcoming tone for their abode would do well to use bright pastels.
Nile Green, a striking yet muted shade, “is calm, quiet and soothing,” says Laurie.
“Minion Yellow is warm and welcoming, conveying a sense of optimism and uplift.”
Pink Lavender – a dulled magenta with millennial pink undertones – would make a home appear youthful and spirited, she adds.

Bright and bold
Are you looking to make a statement and stand out among the rest on your street? Why not opt for a loud shade like Pantone’s True Red?
“Instantly recognised as offering good cheer, a front door in True Red is more likely to be preferred by commanding, dynamic and engaging individuals,” Laurie tells.
Meanwhile, Argyle Purple – a dusty mulberry hue – is regarded as an effective choice for “those with a penchant for the dramatic”.
